Every Lunar New Year season, the mountains of northern Taiwan glow with thousands of floating lights. As night falls, paper lanterns rise slowly into the sky, each carrying handwritten hopes, dreams, and prayers. This breathtaking spectacle is the Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival, one of Taiwan’s most magical traditions. Held in the scenic districts of New Taipei City, particularly in Pingxi, Shifen, and Jingtong, the festival transforms quiet railway towns into luminous stages of shared celebration. It is more than a visual wonder. It is a ritual of hope.
The Origins of the Lanterns
The Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival began over a century ago. In earlier times, villagers in the mountainous region of Pingxi used lanterns to communicate.When bandits threatened the area, residents would retreat into nearby hills for safety. Once the danger had passed, lanterns were released into the sky as a signal that it was safe to return home.What started as a practical signal gradually evolved into a symbol of peace and protection.Over time, the tradition became associated with the Lantern Festival—the final celebration of the Lunar New Year period.
The Night the Sky Comes Alive
Thousands of lanterns, one shared wish As evening settles over Pingxi, crowds gather along railway tracks and open fields. Families, couples, and travelers carefully write their wishes on colorful lanterns. Some lanterns are bright red, symbolizing good fortune. Others feature gold, pink, or blue panels. When released, they rise slowly, glowing warmly against the dark sky. The effect is breathtaking. For a few moments, time feels suspended as thousands of lights ascend together. It is both communal and deeply personal.
